Since Season 1, Episode 1 of USA’s TV series SUITS, we haven’t been able to stop ogling at Rachel Zane played by Meghan Markle. Okay, obviously she’s naturally a beauty–but her makeup is always done in a way that shows off her feminine yet exotic feaures. We’ve deconstructed her makeup look in this photo to help you get that pulled-together-but-somehow-effortless, sexy, professional look!

Of course, first you will prep your skin accordingly with primer (if desired) foundation, concealer, and powder suited to your skin type and coloring.

To get Rachel’s warm rosy glow, use Facade #43 Pom Pom brush to swirl together Facade’s HERMOSA and PARFAIT blush. Start applying at the apple of the cheek and gently sweep back toward the hairline. (Envision the shape of a NIKE swoop). If desired, pick up a little more HERMOSA with the brush and sweep just a little directly above that for a healthy bit of bronzed color.

With Rachel, it’s all about the EYES!

  • Start with a fluffy brush like Facade’s #25 Mini Flick and use it to sweep a nude matte tone similar to your own skin like CALECHE (or SANDOLLAR for those with fairer skin) over the entire eyelid (from lash line to just beneath the eyebrow).
  • Then use a brush with a SABLE fur bristle like Facade #21 Perfect Blender and get it DAMP. (You can lick it , you can spray it with mineral water like Evian, or get it wet under the faucet (squeeze the bristles to make sure the excess is out–you want it damp not dripping).Use this brush to pick up a warm, shimmering, nude tone like BOUDOIR eyeshadow and glaze the entire lower half of the lid (from lashline to crease). Make sure to bring it all the way in toward the tear duct for that really pretty GLEAM in your eyes!
  • Now pick up your #25 Mini Flick brush again. Hold it sideways to sweep FOXGLOVE eyeshadow (a rich, red-based brown) in the crease. Use the brush to gently flick up and out at the corners just a bit.
  • Using Facade #31 Tate contour, choose a darker smokey tone like BELLADONNA eyeshadow. Apply this to the outer corner or “pie” area of the eye–basically draw a little < shape (the bottom line matches up with your lashline and the top line overlaps your natural eye crease–the corner meets up just above the outer corner of your eye.) Now blur this V in so that it delicately overlaps the other colors you’ve applied giving a pretty smoky diffusion. For subtlety, do this technique with a dry brush. For a little added contrast and drama, apply BELLADONNA with a damp brush instead!

If you have any trouble with the first 3 steps of this shadow technique, check out this youtube video for extra help!

Her eyes just wouldn’t have the same POP without eyeliner!

Our waterproof eyeliners are PERFECT for lining the membrane of the eye for a major WOW effect. They won’t disappear throughout the course of the day and they won’t smear all over your face either (legal assistants like just don’t have time for touch-ups!).

Use BARDOT to line the upper membrane, and LORELEI to line the bottom membrane. Lorelei is a very soft gold that helps cancel the redness of the lashbed without lending too much contrast. This is part of what gives that “glow” to the bottom/inner corners of her eyes! (if you prefer a little more contrast, you could also use BARDOT on the bottom lashbed–Rachel sometimes wears it this way, although it is not pictured here)

If you’re having trouble with this step, see the following youtube video…

Now, use MINX eyeliner to line the outer corners of the eyes. Carry the liner up into that corner we made using the darkest eyeshadow and use the smudge tip on the other side to blur slightly. This will deepen the contrast you achieved earlier.

Watch this video from about 1:12 on to see how I would recommend doing the eyeliner. (The technique in the beginning of the video is NOT used for this look)

Of course, you will want to finish your eyes with plenty of volumizing mascara. You could use black or brown. Revitalash Raven mascara in ESPRESSO would be pretty here. It’s a very rich dark brown that would look really pretty with that sort of chestnut hair and dark brown eyes. Use on bottom lashes too, if desired.

Last, but certainly not least, are her lips! Line first with facade VANITY lipliner. This perfect nude matches most natural lip tones so you can get crisp precision (and even over-draw just a touch) without any harsh-looking lines.

Apply STARLET lipstick, a gorgeous nude with just the teensiest hint of pink and a pretty pearl finish, and finish with ELEKTRA lipgloss–a gorgeous sheer nude. Her soft nude lips are part of what pulls this look together. Despite the smokey eye keeps it looking effortless and appropriate for work–even in a law office.

One of the FIRST pieces of advice you’ve probably already heard is go WATERPROOF! The natural moisture of your eyes, combined with Houston’s humidity, and possibly tears- waterproof is the only way your liner can last the day.

Of course, we recommend our very own FACADE WATEPROOF EYE PENCILS which are available in 10 shades. For lining the inside (or membrane) of the eye we particularly recommend Bardot (Black) or Lido (Dark Blue). $22 each. If you prefer a liquid liner to a pencil, we’ve recently become smitten with Diego Dalla Palma’s liquid version which is available in both brown and black, $30.

Many of you have used our liners before and STILL may have a problem with smudging. So HERE are some great trouble-shooting tips:

If it’s not WATER-soluble (i.e. water PROOF), it’s likely OIL-soluble–meaning anything with oils in it will cut right through it. So if you use an oil-based concealer around your eyes or a rich eye cream, they may be breaking down the eyeliner. You have options: For eye creams- try switching to something lighter and GEL-based for the day, and reserve your really rich eye creams for night (We like Darphin Anti-Fatigue Smoothing Eye Gel, $38; Natura Bisse Eye Recovery Balm, $95; and Natura Bisse Stimul-Eye Gel, $65). You can also try changing the formula of concealer you use.

Also try dusting a little bit of a translucent POWDER with a small fluffy brush under your eyes when you’re completely finished with your makeup. This creates a barrier so the oils in other makeup don’t mix with the eyeliner. [We like our FACADE pressed powder in NILLA CREME ($42.50 new or $30 for a refill) it Cosmetics BYE BYE PORES, $24; or Diego Dalla Palma Rice Powder, $52]

STILL getting smudgy?

Consider this: maybe your LINER isn’t the culprit–the problem COULD be mascara!

We don’t always recommend wearing waterproof EVERY day because it can be drying to your lashes—HOWEVER, if you coat them first with a mascara primer like the one by REVITALASH, $24, it may be moisturized enough to handle waterproof every day. We LOVE Diego Dalla Palma Semipermanente mascara, $36—it’s not going ANYWHERE until you take it off!

In addition, we recommend always using a waterproof mascara on bottom lashes (if you use mascara on the bottom lashes at all!) because the bottom is where you’re likely to smudge- especially if your eyes water, or you wipe at them frequently. We recommend Maybelline Lash Discovery in waterproof for this. The itty bitty brush allows for precision–and you don’t need volumizing/lengthening for these lashes–just color. This gives you exactly that!

We are thrilled to share that the owner of Facade, Corinne Williams, was interviewed for a piece in the upcoming issue of PaperCity! PaperCity is a local publication available free in Houston with articles about fashion, trends, events, and Houston society.

Here’s your sneak peek of the interview! You can pick up a copy of PaperCity here at Facade or at several other local businesses throughout Houston!

Want the products Corinne mentions?

Bye Bye Undereye from IT Cosmetics is $25 for a tube that will last you at LEAST 3 months. Bye Bye Pores also from IT Cosmetics is $25. These products are absolute MUST-HAVES as far as we’re concerned! The entire concept behind IT Cosmetics are products that look realistic even on High Definition television. If it’s good enough for that, it’s good enough for us!

Beauty For Real Cream Blushes, $30. We sell the “Beauty For Real” collection too! Each of these creamy blush compacts have two colors in them. In a beautiful dusty rose tone with a soft highlight color called “Get Lit/ In the Pink” and a gorgeous bronze color with a gold highlight called “Goldrush/After glow”. We recommend Using the pink and/or bronze on the apple of your cheek, and either of the highlight colors on the tops of cheekbones for a beautiful, dewy glow. The bronze/gold colors will be beautiful in the upcoming spring/summer months!

ERA spray foundation, $55, by Classified Cosmetics comes in a variety of colors, provides great coverage that looks like real skin, and contains skin-loving ingredients to soothe and heal sensitive or blemish-prone skin. Plus it’s WATERPROOF so you can dance all night long even in Houston’s high humidity and know that your look will last!

LIPSMART, $30, is a beautiful hydrating lip plumper. Old plumpers basically used ingredients they KNOW will irritate your lips to the point they swell–which accounts for the extra volume they provide. It’s usually not harmful–most companies use products like peppermint extract, but it IS irritating. Lipsmart, on the other hand uses ingredients that encourage water retention on a cellular level. Over time, the skin cell swells to accommodate the extra water molecules giving you plump, luscious lips without the sting!

Paul & Joe Beaute 001B Bronzer, $40, is beautiful for paler complexions. It doesn’t have any sparkle in it, and lends a soft beautiful warmth that never looks heavy or dirty.

Facade Natural Touch Foundation, $50, is Corinne’s liquid version of the ERA spray foundation. Great for girls intimidated by the spray application. This formula also feels a little lighter once on and therefor feels better on less oily skins than the spray foundation. It too, is a waterproof formula.

Facade Waterproof Eyeliners, $22. These are THE best eyeliner pencils for lining the inside membrane of the eye HANDS-DOWN. Available in 10 stunning shades that really last! When the nights over and you’re ready to remove, just use a waterproof eye makeup remover like “In An Instant” from Ilona or vaseline works very nicely too!

Tips for the Prettiest Peepers…

You’ve heard it before–we all have… “eyes are the window to the soul”. Lots of girls love drawing focus to their eyes–and when makeup is done properly it draws attention to YOUR EYES and not your EYE MAKEUP!

It’s the difference between “Your eye makeup is so pretty” and “YOU look so pretty!”

So here is a quick trick that gives you extra oomph and definition… take a WATERPROOF eyeliner pencil like BARDOT or LIDO and line the UPPER MEMBRANE of the eye. This makes your lashes look denser/fuller, and makes the whites of your eye look whiter. Don’t believe me? Stand back from your computer screen and take a look for yourself—it doesn’t look like a harsh line—it just gives the eye a little more presence!

The pencils go on creamy at first, and take about 60 seconds to set. When you blink–some of the color may transfer or “click” down onto the lower membrane– if you DON’T like that look, use some gentle eye makeup remover and a q-tip to take it out!

What adds EVEN MORE definition, though, is putting some color on the LOWER MEMBRANE! You can try BARDOT, LIDO, SIREN, or LORELEI! Lorelei gives a barely-there look that just covers the natural pink-y color of the membrane which makes you look fresh–the other colors lend a little more contrast and POP! Refer to picture at left.

If you’re afraid of looking like you forgot you weren’t in middle school anymore and this look just feels too severe, try smudging a little SIREN or LORELEI or BLUEBONNET in your LOWER LASH-BED (indicated in picture at left) then use the smudge tip on the other side of the pencil to blur together. This softens everything but still keeps contrast!

Enjoy your gorgeously defined eyes!!!

You’ve probably been to Facade to shop or have a lesson or your makeup applied for a special occasion–but we also will bring the shop to you! We always have full kits packed and ready to go for special events on-location!

Earlier this year, we did exactly that for Michelle–who was married at Hotel Zaza. The event required two artists– owner Corinne Williams, and senior staff artist Kate Block were responsible for the bridal party’s pretty and polished looks.

The wedding was put together by one of Houston’s finest wedding planners- Ann Whittington– who is also a dear friend of ours at Facade. She shared with us this video put together by the videographers at Elysium.

Pay special attention to frames 1:06 and 1:42 to see Corinne doing the bride’s makeup, and frame 1:41 to see Kate doing a bridesmaid’s.

Michelle & Eddie’s SDE // ZaZa Hotel, Houston from Elysium Productions on Vimeo.

This unique video was actually shot AND edited during the wedding, and played at the end as a surprise for the bride and groom before all the guests left for the evening!

To learn more about pricing for on-location services, please visit our website or call us at 713-552-1545 during regular business hours.
